Working from home is easier and far more pleasant when the space around you is designed for it. A good home office is not about expensive furniture; it is about light, layout, comfort and a few clever upgrades that help you settle in and concentrate.

Choose the right spot

Start by thinking about how you work. If you take lots of calls, a room with a door matters more than a view. If you mostly write or design, natural light and a calm outlook may be the priority. Spare bedrooms, quiet corners of a landing and even a well-planned nook under the stairs can all work.

  • Look for a spot away from the busiest parts of the home, such as the kitchen or the entrance.
  • Check where outlets sit, and whether you will need extra ones or a dedicated circuit.
  • Make sure your Wi-Fi signal is strong, or plan a wired connection.

Get the light right

Natural light boosts mood and energy, so place your desk to the side of a window rather than facing directly into it or with your back to it. That reduces glare on your screen and harsh shadows on your face during video calls.

Layer your lighting with a soft ceiling light for the room, a good task lamp for the desk and, if you like, a warm accent light for the evening. New energy-efficient windows can also make a big difference, letting in more daylight while keeping the room comfortable.

Quick tip: choose a neutral, daylight-style bulb for your task lamp. It keeps colours true and helps you stay alert through the afternoon.

Plan storage that hides the clutter

A tidy desk is a calmer desk. Built-in shelving, closed cabinets and a slim filing drawer keep paperwork and cables out of sight. Floating shelves above the desk use wall space without crowding the floor, and a cable tray under the desktop keeps wires neat.

Think about sound and comfort

Hard surfaces bounce sound around, which can make calls echo. A rug, soft curtains, upholstered seating and a bookcase full of books all help absorb noise. If outside noise is a problem, upgraded windows and better door seals can make the room noticeably quieter.

  • Choose a supportive chair and set your screen at eye level.
  • Keep the room well ventilated and at a comfortable temperature.
  • Add a plant or two for a touch of life and colour.

Make it feel like yours

Finally, give the space some personality. A feature wall in a calming colour, artwork you love or a statement light fitting turns a work corner into a room you look forward to using. If you would like help designing a home office, our interior team can plan the layout, storage and lighting with you.
